Sgt. Kyle William Childress, 29, of Terre Haute died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Balad, Iraq, from wounds suffered in a firefight near Ad Duluiyah, Iraq, as he served his country with the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany. He was born Dec. 20, 1975, in Terre Haute to Keith Childress and Nancy Allen Childress. Survivors include his father, of Terre Haute; his mother, Nancy Allen Knight and her husband Darrel of Terre Haute; two brothers, Jason C. Childress of Terre Haute and Paul Jeffrey Childress of Indianapolis; one sister, Gretta Childress of Harmony; maternal grandmother, Wilma Allen of Terre Haute; two nephews, Mason and Joshua Childress; his fiancee', Kirsten Beck of Germany; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a 1994 graduate of Terre Haute South High School, where he played varsity football. He entered the U.S. Army in September 1999 and was a veteran of the Kosovo conflict. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. He loved fishing and rock music, and he will always be loved and missed by all. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Burial is in Durham Cemetery, with military honors performed by the Caisson Unit of Fort Knox, Ky. Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the planned Iraqi Freedom monument at the Vigo County Veterans Memorial Plaza, in care of Wabash Valley Community Foundation, 2901 Ohio Blvd., Terre Haute, IN 47803.
