Monument. The Basra Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who died and whose graves are not known in World War I operations in Mesopotamia from the Autumn 1914, to the end of August 1921. The Basra Memorial used to be on the main quay of the naval dockyard at Maqil. In 1997, it was relocated at a place along the road to Nasiriyah, what was a major battle ground during the first Gulf War. The move was carried out by the authorities in Iraq, involving a considerable amount of manpower, transport costs and sheer engineering, which resulted in the Memorial being re-erected in its entirety.
