Medical Pioneer. He founded the first Institute for Medical History. He studied medicine in Erlangen and worked later as a doctor in Düsseldorf. From 1901 on he was president of the German Society for the History of Medicine and Natural Science. He studied the medieval medical literature, especially those by Paracelsus. He was called to the University of Leipzig in 1905 and was given free hand in the founding of the Institute. It was finally opened on April 1, 1906 and was renamed in 1938 into "Karl-Sudhoff Institute for the History of Medicine and Natural Science".
