Rock Musician. Founding member of the late-1960s British psychedelic music ensemble Soft Machine. He spent part of his childhood living in Malaysia, due to his stepfather's job as a District Officer and later, he returned to Canterbury where he attended grammar school. It would be during this period when he met fellow music collaborators Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt. Acting on an impulse, they formed their first band The Wilde Flowers in 1963 and yielded a few demo recordings. In 1966, Soft Machine came to fruition and like many band's success stories timing often plays a big role. In 1967, London's music culture was fixated with the sounds of psychedelia leaving Soft Machine to take advantage. The quickly became a leading presence of the psychedelic genre with songs such as "I Should've Known" (1967) and the Ayers' penning of "She's Gone" (1967). After three years of immense success, Soft Machine disbanded. Ayers formed the short-lived group Whole World which lasted intact for one year. Ayers would go onto a busy solo career and record roughly seventeen albums.
