He was a professor of literature at University at Lewisburg, which was later renamed Bucknell University; a Baptist minister; as well as a composer. He also worked as a musical editor at the Biglow Publishing Company. His most memorable works included "Shall We Gather at the River," "Nothing but the Blood of Jesus," and the beloved Easter hymn "Low in the Grave He Lay." The music on his stone is from "Shall We Gather at the River." In 1854, he graduated from University at Lewisburg with the highest honors and, in the same year, was ordained into the Baptist ministry. After joining the Baptist Church, he started writing hymns at age 24.
