U.S. Senator. He graduated from Birmingham Southern College, in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps, (1942-46). After the war, he graduated from the University of Alabama School Law, in 1948, was admitted to the bar in 1948 and commenced to practice law in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He was the chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, (1971-77). In 1978, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1997. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death due to a heart attack.
