British Army Brigadier General, Mahdist War (or Anglo-Sudan War) Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award on November 15, 1898 for his actions as a captain in the 21st Lancers (Empress of India's) of the British Army on September 2, 1898 at the Battle of Omdurman in the Sudan. Born in Everton, Liverpool, England to well-to-do parents of Irish descent, he received his education at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England and St. Francis Xavier College in Liverpool and joined the 21st Lancers of the British Army. He saw action in the Mahdist War, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross, and served in the Second Boer War (1899 to 1900) in South Africa where he was brevetted a major in November 1900. In 1902 he was promoted to the rank of permanent major and led a mounted infantry column during the Third Somaliland Expedition (or Anglo-Somali War). In 1912 he participated as an equestrian for England in the Summer Olympics at Stockholm, Sweden Later he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and served in the Battle of Gallipoli at Sulva Bay, Turkey where he mortally wounded by a sniper at the age of 53. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 2 September 1898, at the Battle of Omdurman, Sudan, when a major of the 21st Lancers was in danger, as his horse had been shot in the charge, Captain Kenna took the major up on his own horse, to a place of safety. After the charge Captain Kenna returned to help Lieutenant De Montmorency who was trying to recover the body of an officer who had been killed." He also received the Companion, Distinguished Service Order, the Queen's Sudan Medal and the Queen's South African Medal, among others. His Victoria Cross is on display at The Queen's Royal Lancers and Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Museum in Thoresby Park, Nottinghamshire, England.
