Singer, grande dame of Tejano music. Born in Kingsville, Texas, she was the first widely popular female singer in the male-dominated world of Tejano music. Made her recording debut in 1973 with Los Unicos, then joined El Conjunto Bernal for a brief period. Her first regional hit was Midnight Blue recorded with The Snowballs. Her 1977 album ranked 10th on Billboard's "Hot Latin" chart. Her 1990 album "No Regrets" stayed on the charts for 13 weeks. In all, she recorded 22 albums and appeared in 15 other albums. She received over two dozen music awards and honors, including Female Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards. In 2000, she became the first female inducted into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame in Alice, Texas. Cause of death: complications from gall bladder surgery; in Corpus Christi, Texas.
