Civil War Confederate Army Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when he began his military career as Captain of "The Wigfall Rifles" in the 29th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He rapidly advanced to the rank of Colonel, commanding the 29th at the battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain. At Resaca, Georgia he was commended for gallantry, after leading a charge on the enemy that repulsed Federal assaults three times. In July, 1864, at the Battle of Ezra Church, Georgia, he took command of the Brigade when General Samuel Benton was killed. He was promoted Brigadier General for his actions and remained in command of the Brigade until the close of the war. After the war he resumed legal practice and in an attempt to bring to justice the parties responsible for the death of his brother, he was shot and killed by unknown assssins.
