Erected in Stockholm, Sweden, the monument is dedicated to the memory of to the victims of the Estonia ferry disaster. On September 28, 1994, in stormy weather while en route from Tallinn to Stockholm, 852 people drowned when the ferry "Estonia" sunk in the Baltic Sea. Rescuers were able to save 137 and of the 852 reported lost many of their bodies were never recovered. With in the memorial's three wedge stone walls is the engraved names of those whom died.
