British Basuto War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born at Finedon in Northamptonshire, he served as a Private with the 94th Regiment (The Connaught Rangers.) On November 28, 1879, during the Basuto War, in the course of an attack on Sekukuni's Town, Private Flawn and Private Francis Fitzpatrick, together with six men of the Native Contingent, were with a Lieutenant of the First Dragoon Guards who was badly wounded. At first, the natives carried the wounded officer, but the party was attacked by about thirty of the enemy, and the natives deserted. The Lieutenant would have been killed, if one of the two Privates had not carried him to safety, while the other one covered the retreat and fired upon the enemy. (Private Fitzpatrick was awarded the Victoria Cross, too, and is buried in Glasgow.) In November 1999, His medal was sold at Sotheby's for £70,000, to a private buyer.
