Civil War Union Soldier. He enlisted in the three-month enlistment 4th New Jersey Militia regiment on April 27, 1861, barely days after the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter, and was mustered in as a Private in Company K. He served with his regiment through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, and was honorably discharged on July 31, 1861 when his unit's term of service ended.

He then enlisted under the name of "Thomas Gilbert", being enrolled in Company A, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Mustered in as a Private in September 13, 1862, he served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the may 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.

Again, using the "Thomas Gilbert" alias, he enlisted in the Union Navy, being mustered in on January 2, 1864. Served with the rating of Coal Heaver, he served on board the USS North Carolina, the USS Monongahela and the USS Arkansas. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 27, 1865.
