Fannie Chappell was born in May of 1879,[2] the daughter of John Franklin and Mary Ann Walker Chappell.[3][4] She was born in the state of Georgia, likely in the county of Carroll.[5][3]

Fannie received a marriage license on January 18, 1897 to marry Mr. Arthur O. Holland, and on January 20th the couple was joined in Matrimony by J. L. Jones, Justice of the Peace. The marriage was licensed by S. J. Brown, ordinary of the county.[6]

By 1900 Fannie had bore 2 children with Arthur. Of these children only one survived to the date of the census. This child, Homer W. Holland, was born July 1, 1899.[7] In 1900 Fannie was not formally employed. The couple's home in Carroll Co. was rented. Both Fannie and her husband could read, write, and speak in English.[2]

By 1910 Fannie had bore 5 children from the marriage, with only three living. John F. Holland was born about 1904; his sister Ruth H. Holland born on December 28, 1905.[8] Fannie is widowed by 1910 and is living with her parents where she and her eldest son Homer helped with work on the family farm. Both Homer and John attended school that year.[9]

Sometime after the death of his wife in 1910 or 1911, Fannie started courting Clifford Edgar Hardwell. While the relationship between the two does not seem to have lead to marriage, the couple did have one daughter together. Essie Maude Harwell was born Essie Maude Holland on April 28, 1912.[1][10]

By 1920 the Chappell family, including Fannie Holland and her surviving children, had moved to Weltie, Cullman County, Alabama. Both Rutha H. and Essie Maude attended school in 1920, and all of Fannie's surviving children were literate by this year. Fannie and her father, who lived next-door, are both listed as "General Farmers" in 1920; none of Fannie's children were employed.[10]

Fannie Chappell Holland died on March 24, 1920 in Weltie, Cullman County, Alabama. She was aged about 41 years.[4]
