Politician. He is remembered for holding the office of Lord Chancellor of Ireland from 1858 to 1859. This was the highest judicial office in Ireland from earliest times until the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.The Right Honorable Sir Joseph Napier, 1st Baronet, was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dublin. Before being accepted to the Irish Bar in 1831, he was educated at Belfast Academical Institution and Trinity College, Dublin. He became Attorney General for Ireland from March to December of 1852 and made member of the privy council of Ireland in 1852. He received a Doctorate of Civil Law in 1853. He was created Baronet in 1867. He retired in 1888. He was buried at Mount Jerome Cemetery with a memorial tablet place in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin in his honor. Since his eldest son died young, his second son Joseph became 2nd Baronet upon his death. His grandson, William Napier, 3rd Baronet, died in World War I at the Battle of Gallipoli in Turkey and was buried there.
