Hotel Proprietress. Mauritia Mayer, nicknamed "Moritz," was famous in Bavaria as the proprietress of the Pension Moritz on the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden. This hotel became very popular with the Bavarian, Prussian, and Austrian ruling families, and with famous artists and musicians such as Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann. Moritz Mayer was immortalized as the character of "Judith Platter" in Richard Voss' novel "Zwei Menschen" (Two People), and her hotel came to be known as the Platterhof. When the Nazis took over the Obersalzberg in the 1930s, they turned the Platterhof into a huge luxury hotel. The area was bombed in 1945, but the American Army renovated the Platterhof as the Hotel General Walker, a vacation spot for American soldiers. The hotel was returned to the German government in 1995, and was torn down in 2000.
