Actor. He gained fame as a stage and film actor who often had character or supporting roles. Born Israel "Sully" Boyar, a twin in a large Russian-Jewish family, he studied law, becoming a lawyer before entering an acting career. On Broadway in 1977, he appeared in "The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel." On television, he appeared in four episodes of the successful "Law and Order" series in the role of a judge. He appeared in roles on "Barney Miller," two episodes of "Kojak" and "The Equalizer," three episodes of "Ryan's Hope," "Charlie's Angels," and "The Sopranos." His film roles include "Men Outside" in 1965, "The Panic in Needle Park" in 1971, "The King of Marvin Gardens" in 1972, "Dog Day Afternoon" in 1975, "Oliver's Story" in 1978, "The Jazz Singer" in 1980, "Prizzi's Honor" in 1985, and "Betsy's Wedding" in 1990. At the Chicago International Film Festival, he received the 1992 "Best Supporting Actor" for his role in "In the Soup." He died suddenly from a heart attack.
