US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Robert LeRoy Winkel entered the Marine Corps 29 October, 1943 from Audubon, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 11th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA.

12 January, 1944 assigned to D Company, Infantry Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. Trained and designated an Automatic Rifleman (MOS 746). Promoted to Private First Class. Assigned to the 52nd Replacement Battalion.

April, 1944 embarked Naval Transport at San Diego for movement overseas. Assigned to H Battery, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division.

27 - 29 August 1944 landing rehearsals at Guadalcanal. Left Pavuvu for invasion of Palau Islands.

15 September, 1944 landed on D-Day at Peleliu in support of the 7th Marines. Participated in combat operations until Killed in Action.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Samuel M Winkel (14 Dec 1899 - 1 June 1982) and Mrs June E Winkel (25 June 1901 - 1 May 1977), 504 1st Evenue, Audubon, Iowa.

Initially buried in the 1st Marine Division Cemetery Peleliu

1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Audubon, Iowa.
