Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1948, 1950, 1952 and 1954 to 1960), he was a left-handed pitcher and first baseman with the New York Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Born John Elvin Harshman, he attended Herbert Hoover High School in California. His initial impression on the baseball diamond was made during his time in the Western International League where he shined as a slugger. After signing with the Giants, he marked his Major League debut with them at the first-baseman position as a late season call-up on September 16th, 1948; he appeared in 5 games that year. After moving onto the White Sox, he made a successful conversion to pitcher and yielded a career-high 15 victories in 1956 while with Chicago. In 217 regular season games, he compiled a 69 win, 65 loss record with a 3.50 lifetime ERA in 1,169 innings pitched. Following his baseball career, he worked as a salesman with the Pepsi-Cola Corporation.
