Florida Governor. He was Florida's 10th Governor and the first born in the State of Florida. Raised on his father's plantation, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a member of the Florida State Legislature in 1845 and under the Reconstruction Act of 1867, he was supervisor of elections, taking part in restoring the Florida State's government after the Civil War. He was a judge Florida's State Supreme Court (1868 to 1873). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican the 10th Governor of Florida, serving until his death at age 53 caused by pneumonia.
