World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Hampshire, Great Britain, he served as a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, British Army. During a nighttime attack at Ningthoukong, Burma, on June 7, 1944, Sergeant Turner was forced to reorganize his men and prepare them for a withdrawal. Although the enemy attacked them in force, Sergeant Turner managed to consolidate their positions, but was suffering heavy casualties. Sergeant Turner decided to take the initiative, grabbed some fragmentation grenades and stormed in the direction of the enemy. Five times in a row, he went back to his own lines to pick up more grenades, and, on his sixth return trip, was shot and killed. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on August 15, 1944.
