British Royalty and Military Figure. Born in Oxwick, Norfolk, he was the Land Agent to the British Royal Family at Sandringham. In 1901, he was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order and Knighted the Order of St. Olav in November 1906. With the outbreak of World War I, Beck was instrumental in the formation of the Sandringham volunteers and serving as Captain of Company E, in the 5th Battalion, Norflok Regiment, British Army. Despite his age of 54 and the fact King George V told him not to go, Beck left with his company attached to the Expeditionary Forces for foreign service at Gallipoli, Turkey. On August 12, 1915, while leading his company during the attack on Anafarta, Captain Beck with many of the Sandringham Company were last and never found. For many years, nothing was known of their fate which created a mystery war legend. After the Armistice in 1918, Queen Alexandra took interest in what happened to Captain Beck and his men. Thus at the Anafarta battle field, 180 bodies were found scattered over an area of 800 yards behind the Turkish front line. Captain Beck's watch was recovered and presented to his family. Beck with his men, were commemorated with their names on a bronze plaque on the Helles Memorial and on the Sandringham war memorial cross. For the film depicting the Sandringham company "All the King's Men" (1999), actor David Jason portrayed Captain Beck.
