Actor. Considered by many to be the epitome of the quintessential English gentleman on screen. A pupil of Harrow, he first acquired the acting bug whilst at Oxford University. He married fellow actor Dulcie Gray in 1939, a partnership which would last for no less than 59 years, until his death in 1998. He made his screen debut that same year with an uncredited role in "Inspector Honleigh on Holiday" (1939). After serving with British Intelligence during World War Two, he began appearing in a series of Rank Films, including "Hungry Hill" (1947) and the Blind Goddess" (1948). His most famed role came as that of Algernon Moncreif in Antony Asquith's comedy of manners, "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1951). One of his final performances was in Richard Attenborough's acclaimed C.S. Lewis biopic "Shadowlands" (1993).
