Evanell Johnson Barrett
Evanell Johnson Barrett, 76, died Monday, March 6, in Norman. A private, family service and burial will be in Elk City. Martin Funeral Home in Elk City is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Barrett was born July 27, 1929, in Elk City, to Anna Beatrice Walter Johnson and Tom C. Johnson. She grew up in Elk City and later on a farm outside of Drumright. She graduated from Drumright High School in 1947 and graduated with a journalism degree in 1951 from Oklahoma State University. After college graduation Mrs. Barrett traveled to Europe, visiting many countries including England, France and Germany. After returning she began working for the Ponca City News. There, she met her husband, then Lt. Roscoe Lloyd Barrett Jr. They married Oct. 5, 1952, and had one son.
In 1970, Mrs. Barrett, her husband and their son moved to Norman after Roscoe retired from the Marine Corps. Mrs. Barrett lived in Norman the rest of her life. In the 1970s she was involved with local and national politics, as well as Cleveland County Mental Health Association. She is remembered as an intelligent and passionate person and extremely well read. She enjoyed discussing politics and was an accomplished painter and sculptor. In later years, she particularly enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Barrett was preceded in death by her parents and brother Jerry T. Johnson.
Mrs. Barrett is survived by her husband retired Marine Corps Col. Roscoe Lloyd Barrett of Norman; and a son and wife and two grandchildren
