U.S. Congressman. At the age of eighteen, he started working for the Pennsylvania Railroad car shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and later engaged in banking in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, plus had mining interests in western Pennsylvania. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1880 and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1884 to 1888). In 1891, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893, and elected to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving (from 1895 to 1897). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was again elected to the Fifty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1903 to 1911).
