Connecticut Governor. He graduated from Yale University in 1802, studied law, and was admitted to the bar and never practiced due to ill health. After an extended sea voyage, he regained his health, returned home, served as an associate judge of New Haven County Court (1818-19, 1836- 37) and was Sheriff of New Haven, (1820-34). He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, serving (1850, 1852-53. In 1853, when Governor Thomas H. Seymour resigned from office, Pond assumed the duties as the 37th Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1861. He died at age 80 in the same month and year of the bombardment of Fort Sumter, at the start of the Civil War.
