US Congressman and Revolutionary War General. He was a member of the Hiester Family political dynasty. He was a brother John and Gabriel, uncle of William and Daniel, and cousin of Joseph. After completing his education at local schools he entered the mercantile business in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He first served during the Revolutionary War as a colonel and was later commissioned a brigadier general in the Pennsylvania Militia. Upon entering politics he was a member of Pennsylvania's supreme executive council from 1784 to 1786 and commissioner of the Connecticut land claims dispute in 1787. He represented Pennsylvania as a member of the Anti-Administration Party in the First, Second, and Third Congresses and as a Republican in the Fourth Congress. He resigned in 1796 and moved to Hagerstown, Maryland where he was elected to the Seventh and Eighth Congresses and he died while in office. Originally interred in the Congressional Cemetery, he was reinterred in the Zion Reformed Graveyard in Hagerstown, Maryland.
