U.S. Congressman. Born in New York City, he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1829 and became successful in newspaper publishing. He was elected comptroller of Pittsburgh, in 1860 and served as clerk of the Pennsylvania Senate, (1860-61). During the Civil War, he was a paymaster in the United States Army, (1861-66). After the war, he was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1867, assessor of internal revenue, (1869-73) and clerk of the Pennsylvania Senate, (1872-76). In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Arthur as United States pension agent at Pittsburgh, serving (1883-87). He died at age 73 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania.
