United States Congressman. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Dickinson College in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816, and commenced to practice law in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1824-29). In 1829, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the 21st Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Wilkins and reelected to the 22nd through the 24th Congresses, serving until 1837. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State Constitutional Convention in 1837. He was a presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1840, commissioner of incorporation of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1846, and incorporator of the Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1848. He was President of the Pittsburgh & Steubenville Railroad Company in 1851, trustee of the Western University of Pennsylvania, and Director of the Western Theological Seminary at the time of his death at age 57 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
