U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Pennsylvania, in 1847, he attended Western University of Pennsylvania, graduated from Yale College in 1865, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress and to the next twelve succeeding Congresses, serving until 1913. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He died at age 82 while on a visit to see his son in California.
