U.S. Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1806, commenced to practice law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was editor of the Tree of Liberty, newspaper. In 1822, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry Baldwin and reelected as a Jackson Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving until 1824. He was appointed by President Harrison as First Comptroller of the Treasury, when he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in the Cabinet of President Tyler, serving (1841-43). After leaving his Cabinet post, he practiced law and was appointed by President Taylor Chargé d’Affaires to Denmark, serving (1849-51). Returning to America, he served as president judge of the district court of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, until his death at age 66.
