Lt Colonel Jeff Nicklin was the Commander of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion from September 8, 1944 to March 24, 1945 when he was killed during Operation Varsity, which was the Crossing of the Rhine River. Lt Col Nicklin was found hanging in a tree in his parachute harness with clean shoes, and multiple and fatal gunshot wounds, indicating the enemy killed him before he got to the ground.

Prior to the war he was a defensive end for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and considered an outstanding player. In 1946 the the First Canadian Paratroops Battalion created and donated a trophy to honor the Canadian Football League (CFL) Most Ourstanding Player. Since 1973 this award is given to the Most Outstanding Player of the Western Division.

Awarded the OBE; he was 30, the son of Percy Harold and Eva Louise Nicklin; husband of Mary Eileen Nicklin of Port Credit, Ontario
