World War II German Naval Officer. He was the commanding officer of the Nazi German battleship "Bismarck" during its brief time in commission. The "Bismarck" and the heavy cruiser "Prinz Eugen" left Germany in May 1941 to engage Allied commerce in "Operation Rhine" under the overall command of Admiral Gunther Lutjens. On May 24, 1941 "Bismarck" encountered two British warships, sending one, “HMS Hood”, to the bottom within minutes before beginning one of the most epic sea chases in maritime history. The "Bismarck" was heavily damaged by a superior British flotilla, causing Captain Lindemann to order it’s scuttling on May 27, 1941. Captain Lindemann was last seen alive talking with a crewman while standing on the overturned bow of his ship.
