U.S. Senator, U.S. Diplomat. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Tennessee in the United States Senate from 1967 until 1985. He served as the Majority Leader of the Senate from 1981 until 1985. The son of United States Congressman Howard Henry Baker, the younger Howard attained his law degree from the University of Tennessee and began practicing in 1949. Baker initially studied Engineering before focusing on Law. Prior to attending college, he served with the United States Navy during World War II (WWII). During his tenure in the Senate, Baker supported expansion of environmental issues and Civil Rights. He was a member of the Senatorial panel which investigated Watergate. During Ronald Reagan's presidency, Baker took a more conservative approach and supported the administration's policies. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984. From 1987 until 1988, he served as President Reagan's chief of staff. From 2001 until 2005, he served as the United States Ambassador to Japan. Baker was married to Danice Joy Dirksen (daughter of former Illinois' United States Senator Everett Dirksen until her death in 1993. He later married Kansas United States Senator Nancy Kassebaum. Baker died of complications from a stroke.
