Arnold William Erickson was one of the 22 sailors killed aboard the USS Cassin Young (DD793) on July 30, 1945, about seven miles east of Okinawa when a low-flying kamikaze hit the destroyer about 3:30 am. Of those killed, Erickson was the oldest, being a radioman with two college degrees who worked for paper companies in Washington being going into the Navy. The Cassin Young is now a museum ship, docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard across the river from Boston, MA, one hundred yards from the USS Constitution at Pier One. Arnold was the son of immigrants Hyjalmar and Albertina Erickson. He was a graduate of Washington State. The ship can be Googled via either Boston National Historical Park or the USS Cassin Young volunteer website.
