Journalist. A baseball writer for 50 years, he started with the New York "World-Telegram" and then the "World Telegram and Sun". He and Nat Fleischer founded boxing's "The Ring" magazine. He also is credited with staging the first college basketball games in New York's Madison Square Garden. In 1972, he received the Baseball Writers Association of America's J. G. Taylor Spink Award, the Baseball Hall of Fame's highest honor for sportswriters. In 1977, he was elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame.
