Henry Tureman Allen (1859-1930) - Find a Grave Memorial

United States Army Major General, Explorer. In 1882, he graduated from West Point and was commissioned an officer in the US Cavalry. Serving with General Nelson A. Miles in 1885, he led the first extensive 1500 mile journey of exploration through central Alaska. He later served as a military attaché to Russia (1890-95) and to Germany (1897-98). During the Spanish American War, he commanded a troop of the 2nd Cavalry at the Battle of El Caney and on escort duty in the Santiago Land Campaign. In July 1916, he became a Colonel in command of the 8th Cavalry Regiment and led them in the Punitive Expedition, Mexico. Promoted Brigadier General in May 1917, he commanded the 19th Army Division of the 7th Corps during World War I. On February 19, 1923, Brigadier General Allen left the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz, and the first U.S. occupation of European territory was over. After the war, he was a Major General in command of the 8th Corps American Occupation Forces in Germany from 1919, until his retirement in 1923. He died of heart disease at age 71 and General Pershing was one of the pallbearers at his burial.
