His obituary (Morning Press, 22 Jan 1893) reports that he graduated from the Cincinnati Dental College and began his dental practice in Santa Barbara about 1883. Until about 1890, he practiced with Dr. Henry W. Moore at 1109 State St., Santa Barbara, before setting up in practice by himself. In July 1890 he married Maud Louise Ryan (1868-1949), then living in Santa Barbara, but born in Massachusetts. The couple had one son, Herbert Ronald Doulton (1891-1973). George Herbert died unexpectedly at the age of 29 in January 1893. Ten years later, his widow married in Chicago, the Germantown, PA native Reginald Herber Shoemaker Jr. (1868-1941). They had no further children, and Maud's son was brought up by the couple in Lindsay, CA, as Herbert Ronald Doulton Shoemaker. The son became a physician practicing in South Pasadena. He married Charlotte Isabel Anderson (1904-1977).
