He died of his injuries at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, after being severely burned on May 1, 2006 when a roadside bomb exploded near his humvee while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He grew up near Bethesda, MD, an only child. He graduated from Sandy Spring Friends School in 1997. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1998. During his first deployment to Iraq in 2004, he suffered a foot injury from an explosive device in Fallujah, earning a Purple Heart. He was injured and died after returning in 2006 for his second tour of duty in Iraq. He had intended to retire from the Marine Corps in 2007.

He was survived by his parents; his wife of just short of one year; and his mother-in-law, all of whom were able to be with him when he passed away.
