Run Down By Street Car.
John Baker, of Hackney, Dies From the Injuries.
John Baker, a resident of Hackney, the little town north of here on the interurban line to Winfield, met with an accident late yesterday afternoon which proved fatal, as he died about 9:30 o'clock last night. He passed away at his home, which is with his son-in-law, Rev. Oliver Givens, pastor of the Untied Brethren church at Hackney. Mr. Baker was struck by the Arkansas City-Winfield express and baggage car of the Southwestern Interurban Railway co., was knocked down and ran over by the car, as he was walking on the track near his home. His left leg was so badly crushed that it was found necessary to amputate the member just below the knee. He was also severely injured in the back and head and in other parts of the body. He also had internal injuries. On account of his age, he being 71 years old, he was unable to withstand the shock and the serious injuries. Mr. Baker was quite deaf, in fact it is said that he could scarcely hear at all, and he failed to get off the track when the car approached him from the rear yesterday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock. The car men attempted to attract his attention by ringing the gone and expecting every second that he would get off the track, they failed to stop in time to avoid the serious and fatal accident. The accident happened at the U.B. crossing just south of Hackney. Motorman Swanders and Conductor Robert Fleming were on the car that ran over Mr. Baker. The accident was one of the kind that seems to be of an unavoidable nature and is to be regretted.

He married Marilla Bryant on March 6, 1867 in Perry County, Indiana.
Marilla died before 1900 and John was living with his daughter Ida (Baker) Givens in Cowley County, Kansas in 1910 at the time of his death.
