Birtie M. (Lape) Hanover was born in Hammond, Indiana, on September 28, 1930. She was the adopted daughter on William E . and Goldie V. (Lamar) Lape. Her family purchased a farm in rural Attica, Fountain County, Indiana as a vacation and weekend retreat. They eventually made this residence their permanent home. Here is where Birtie discovered her great love for horses. Birtie competed in many horse shows through her teens and continued to raise horses until her death.
Birtie married George M. Hanover, Jr. at her parent's residence on April 17th, 1953. George and Birtie made their home in Danville Illinois until early 1975. When her father passed away in 1974, Birtie and George decided to move back to her childhood home.
Birtie was survived by her husband and children, George William Hanover, Debra Lynn Bladt and Gregory Alan Hanover. She is also survived by her stepdaughters, Sandra K. Barret and Sheila F. Drais.
Birtie passed away on May 9, 1997 at the age of 66 from complications of lung cancer.
Mom was an animal lover like her mother. I remember our dog had a litter of pups and the runt was very sick. She nursed this pup day and night with an eyedropper. Mom refused to let it die. She named this pup "Grrrrr" because everytime you touched "Grrrr" he would growl.
My mother hardly every swore. I was visiting one summer in late August and had slept in. Coming down the stairs, I heard mom in the kitchen muttering. I walked into the kitchen to find my mother on her hands and knees under the table saying "come here you little f***er". Seems there was a cricket under the table that was driving her nuts.
It is hard to put into works what my mother meant to me. She was my best friend. The worst day of my life was the day she passed away. Every spring we would talk for hours about what flowers we would plant in our yards. I find little joy in this since she passed.
I miss you so much.
