Born in a Philippine refugee camp after his parents had fled Cambodia, then in the state of civil war, his family moved to the United States in 1981. After graduating from high school in 1999, Ung enlisted into the United States Marine Corps as a combat engineer and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine expeditionary force. In April of 2003, he was involved in a diversionary action which provided the cover for the publicized rescue of PFC Jessica Lynch. A few days later, he was wounded by shrapnel but returned to duty a few weeks later. In July of 2003, Ung returned back to California to await the end of his enlistment so he could start attending college classes. On October 19, 2003, Ung was at his father's home in Long Beach, California attending a family barbecue when an unknown individual reached over the backyard fence with a gun and began firing. Corporal Ung was fatally wounded and passed away a short time later.
