My great-uncle. Henry was the second-born of the four children of Alice Wellek Wetmore and William Wetmore, Sr. He and his siblings grew up in the Mechesneytown area of Latrobe, later moving into Latrobe proper. Raised as devout faithful Catholics, Henry and his brother and sisters went to the school run by their church, Holy Family, until they reached junior high. His mother was a homemaker and his father worked at Vanadium Alloy Steel Company for 46 years until his retirement. Where their mother was gentle and kind-spirited, teaching her children to value their faith in God, always able to help them with problems, and never having an unkind cruel word to say about anyone, their father was the stricter and more authoritarian parent (to say the least!), instilling in them a respect for authority and their elders. Growing up he and his family also lived very near his maternal grandmother Alice Neiman Wellek, who was the only living grandparent they knew. As a result, he and his siblings had a very special relationship with her.
Henry served in the Navy during World War II; his older brother Bill also was in the service. His training took place in Great Lakes, Illinois; Tampa, Florida; and Norfolk, Virginia. His overseas service took him to Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Saipan, and Okinawa. After the war he was stationed in Japan with the Occupational Forces. He married to a woman named Dorothy, who was six years his junior. They were homebodies and continued to live in the Latrobe area until Henry's death. He was the first of his siblings to have passed away, and his death at the relatively young age of only sixty-six was an understandable shock for the family.
