Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Enlisting in the Confederate Company G, 154th Tennessee Regiment at age 15, he was cited for bravery at Murfreesboro in 1863 and promoted to second lieutenant. After the Civil War he attended the University of Mississippi and then studied law in his father's Memphis office. He became a lawyer, and later became State Attorney General. In 1900 Wright was a member of the second Philippine Commission and became the protectorate's Vice-Governor in 1901. He was Governor General of the Philippines from 1904 to 1906, Ambassador to Japan from 1906 to 1907, and U.S. Secretary of War from 1908 until the end of President Theodore Roosevelt's administration in 1909. After leaving office he retired to Memphis.
