US Congressman, Diplomat. He was the father of US Senator Charles James Faulkner (1847-1929). He graduated from Georgetown University in 1822 and became a lawyer in 1829. West Virginia was then part of Virginia and he served in the Virginia House from 1829 to 1834, as a State Senator from 1838 to 1842, and again in the House from 1848 to 1849. In 1850 he was elected to the US House as a Whig and served four terms, 1851 to 1859. In 1859 he was appointed Minister to France. When he returned after the Civil War began he was arrested and charged with negotiating arms sales for the Confederacy. He was paroled in December 1861 and arranged to be exchanged for Congressman Alfred Ely of New York, taken prisoner at Bull Run. He then joined the Confederate Army and served as a staff officer. Afterwards he practiced law and was involved in the railroad business. In 1874 he was elected to Congress as a Democrat and served one term. He then retired to "Boydville," his family estate.
