South Dakota Governor. Receiving a law degree from the University of South Dakota in 1927, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law with the firm of Smith and Mickelson in Selby, South Dakota. He served as Attorney of Walworth County, (1933-36), a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives (1936-41) and was Attorney General of South Dakota (1943-47). In 1947, he was elected as a Republican the 18th Governor of South Dakota, serving until 1951. During his two terms, he promoted the bond indebtedness of the state and helped move conservation measures through the state legislature. He also promoted the expansion of highway construction, helped lead development of the Missouri River and aided in the distribution of bonuses to World War II veterans. Not seeking reelection, he was appointed a U.S. District Judge for the District of South Dakota, in 1953 and served until his death. His son George S. Mickelson, was also Governor of South Dakota (1987-93).
