George V. Baker Dead.
"Died, at his home on north Walnut street in this city last evening at 11:15 o'clock, Mr. George V. Baker, in the 64th year of his age. The funeral services will he held at the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. Hankins officiating, under the auspices of McCook Post, G. A. R.
The death of Mr. Baker was a sudden and sad shock to nearly everybody and the announcement was greeted all over town this morning with deep and sincere expressions of sorrow. He was not a man who mixed up in the affairs of others to a great extent, but quietly and unostentatiously he lived a simple life of honesty and virtue that is worthy of emulation. He was well posted on the affairs of the day and would sit at his work and converse about matters of interest with any friend who happened in, in a manner which showed a bright and cultivated mind.
He was well educated, a steady worker, a patriotic citizen, and a man of warm affection, a gentleman always. And so he lived quietly here In Iola for many years, following his trade of boot and shoemaker with dignity and with no thought of apology for his humble calling either on his part or his friends. The thought might come to his friends that he could have adorned a more lofty station in life, but he never discussed the matter and cheerfully and mindfully made much of his manhood in the place where circumstances put him.
Therefore it is that a sad pronouncement hangs over the town today and everybody joins the REGISTER in condolences for his untimely taking off. G. V. Baker was a gentleman in heart, mind, and deed, than which title no man can earn higher."
