Seychellois Statesman. Born James Richard Marie Mancham, he served as the first President of Seychelles from 1976 to 1977. He went to law school in England. When Great Britain announced its intention to give Seychelles its independence, he formed the Seychelles Democratic Party. He became the chief minister of the islands and helped to promote tourism to the islands. He arranged for the building of the airport that made the islands accessible to the rest of the world. This led to increased tourism and helped the economy to develop. In 1976 he was democratically elected the first president of the new nation, but a year later, was deposed in a coup led by Prime Minister France-Albert Rene while he was attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in London. He went into exile in London until 1992 when he returned to Seychelles. He ran again for president in both 1993 and 1998, but was not successful. He was also the author of three books. In 2011 he was one of the recipients of the Gusi Peace Prize.
