Gospel singer and recording artist. Maynard was a member of the Gospel Quartet Isaiah 58. The group was popular not only for their music but also for the fact that two of its members had physical handicaps. Jerry Maynard had been born with a heart ailment, and Steve Houart had been paralyzed from the waist down during a shooting accident as a child. The group released their self-titled album "Isaiah 58" in the 1990's and soared to popularity. There were plans to release another album, but this was never to be. Maynard's name was placed on the list for a heart transplant shortly after the release of the album. He did not live to see the surgery. On July 4th, 2000, Maynard sat out in his yard with his wife and children along with Houart and watched as the neighborhood shot off the yearly fireworks. The next morning Maynard rose early as he normally did and went into his bathroom to get ready for his normal daily routine. His wife, Jana, came into the bathroom and found him laying in the floor. He had suffered a massive heart attack. He was rushed to the Dexter Hospital. There are conflicting reports as to just where he died. Some say he died at the hospital. Others say he was already dead when Jana found him. At his funeral, Maynard was laid in state with a 4th of July tie draped over his hands to show that he had enjoyed the Holiday with his family before his death.
