John Eberhardt was my "Grandpa Pop." He passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 15, 2007, at Strawberry Lane Medical & Rehabilitation Center from a MRSA hospital-acquired infection after leg amputation surgery at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield on Jan. 5, 2007.
John was the eighth child of Emil and Mary (Gaulke) Eberhardt. He was born on the family farm in the town of Grant.
He attended Oak Park Grade School in the town of Grant. When the family moved to Milwaukee, he attended Emmaeus Lutheran Grade School and North Division High School where he lettered in high hurdles in track. The family returned to the town of Grant in 1929. He then stayed home but later finished his education, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1932. He returned to Milwaukee where he married Leona Neumann on Oct. 24, 1936, at Siloah Lutheran Church. She passed away June 28, 1998.
John was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kellner as a child and again when returning to the area. He was the head welder at A.O. Smith Corp. of Milwaukee, when he notably welded on oil refinery tanks and the experimental model of the blockbuster bomb used in World War II. In 1946 he and his family returned to the town of Grant and ran the family farm. He began employment at Consolidated Water Power and Paper Co. in 1951, retiring in 1976. He did custom welding, welded for the town of Grant for several years, baled hay, did fabrication and repaired everything possible, and also cared for his daughters' and granddaughters' horses until the age of 92.
He enjoyed football, especially the Green Bay Packers, deer hunting, his woods, riding the four-wheeler, horses, farming, planting and harvesting. At age 91, he drove the tractor nearly all day to bale straw. He also liked the garden, especially waiting for that first tomato and the sweet corn. He was "Pop Pop" to his great-grandchildren.
John and Leona were blessed with four children, Gordon (Arlene) and Donald (Gayle) Eberhardt and Susan Alft, and Linda (Craig) Schlottman, 10 grandchildren, John (Vicki) Alft, Jodi (Tony Lomma) Eberhardt, Wendy (Jim) Kiedrowski, Todd, Eric (Shannon), Dan, Steve and Carrie, Lisa, and Heidi (Jim) Slate, four great-grandchildren, Cody and Cassie Kiedrowski, and Noah, Elizabeth and future Baby Slate, two step-grandchildren, Charlotte (Paul) Goldberg of Arpin and Daniel (Patti) Olson, six stepgreat-grandchildren, Kevin (Lana), Lisa and Scott Goldberg, Rob and Jim (Sarah) Barnes, and Jeremy Olson; eight step-great-great-grandchildren, Haley, Della and Karlie Goldberg, and Jacob, Tara, Kelsey, Logan and Fox Barnes. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Margaret (Neumann) Dvorak.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son-in-law, Francis Alft; five brothers, Lester (Frances), Elmer (Mae), Urban, Harold (Ruby) and Floyd (Mildred) Eberhardt; and three sisters, infant Loretta, Arvilla (Fred) Pischke and Lorinda (Ken) Kester.
