Historian. He was at various times a cowboy, a professor, a historian and an arch conservative gubernatorial candidate. His frontier chronicles made him one of Texas' leading literary leaders. His books included "The XIT Ranch of Texas" (1929) and "Charles Goodnight: Cowman and Plainsman" (1936). His 1956 bid for governor included a pledge to use the Texas Rangers to defend school segregation.
